In the Haze of the Night: Part 4

After a long night, we got back to Ryan’s apartment around three. I kicked off my heels and plopped down on the couch. Ryan got me some water and sat down on the opposite end.

“Mind if I watch TV?” I asked.

“I don’t have cable or an antenna or anything.”

“Oh.”

“I do have a Blu-Ray player. We could watch a movie if you’d like.”

“Sure.”

He picked out a mindless action flick and put it in. Then he sat back down on the couch, this time right next to me.

A Movie Ignored

“Pass me the clicker,” he said. “It’s on the table next to you.”

I picked up the remote and handed it over to him. As I did, I got a good look at his right hand. His fingers were slightly bruised and his knuckles looked as if they had been bleeding.

Joey.

Did Joey and Ryan get into a fight? I knew there was something funny going on when Paul and I came out of that bar. But if they did fight, why didn’t he say anything?

The movie started and I turned out the light. Five minutes later, Ryan put his arm around my shoulder and kissed me. This time, I didn’t hesitate. I kissed him back. Soon we were sprawling out on top of one another, shedding a few layers of clothing as we went along. We turned off the movie and made out for a little while, until my back started to hurt.

“What’s wrong?” he asked.

“I’m just a little uncomfortable, that’s all.”

“Oh, we can take it slower if you’d like.”

“No. I mean I’m physically uncomfortable lying on this couch.”

“Yeah, my couch sucks.”

“I’ll say.”

“I know somewhere more comfortable.”

The Next Day

We went into the bedroom, lost what little clothes we had left, and made love till the sun started rise. Then we fell asleep. It was the best sleep of my life, and by the time I woke up, it was mid-afternoon.

I got up to get some aspirin for my throbbing head. When I opened my purse, a crumpled parking ticket fell out. I imagined the DUI ticket I would have gotten driving back to Billerica. Then I thought of waking up in jail, or in Joey’s bed. I checked my phone. No more drunken texts. Even if there were, I would ignore them. I was ready to move on.

I put my phone away and went back to the bedroom. Ryan was softly snoring. I got back into bed beside him. A few more hours of with him would be just fine.

The End
